Simon Murphy is a Glasgow based portrait and editorial photographer whose ‘Govanhill Street Level’ project was a highlight of last year’s Govanhill International Festival.

  • Hannah Frank: Art on the Streets

Hannah Frank’s iconic black and white drawings are resonant of the style and iconography of the Art Nouveau period. Prints of these famous artworks will pop up in shops and cafes around Govanhill. In 1917 at the age of nine, Hannah Frank and her family moved from the Gorbals to 72 Dixon Avenue in Govanhill. Her father Charles Frank had opened a photography and science store in 1907 in Saltmarket which became one of the best known photographic centres in the city (and provided Saturday work for the young Hannah Frank when she became a student).

SEIN

SEIN are looking for an illustrator to create 15-20 spot illustrations that represent both the services of the network, and the activities of their members. The illustrations will be used to enhance the visual branding of SEIN to foster a greater sense of belonging amongst our members and increase awareness of our work amongst the wider community. Food Project Govanhill 2021 – Participatory Action Research

The project was delivered by Glasgow Community Food Network who formed a working group made up of local people. 

“Our aim with the PAR project was to get service users’ direct feedback and honest opinions on food providers in Govanhill, in relation to the themes of our project – food dignity, effective partnership working, sustainable and resilient supply chains, and food and income insecurity – and then use this to influence local change.”

Explore Glasgow Walking Group co-run with Outdoors For You will be starting on the 2nd of August These walking groups will allow young people to explore Glasgow and connect with nature. For ages 16 -25 years old. All participants will get a £40 decathlon voucher for walking boots.

Cooking Classes co-run with Propagate will be starting on the 29th of July and running every Thursday from 2-4pm at the East Pollokshields Quad. For ages 16 -25 years.

Summer Cycling Club co-run with Bike For Good is starting back up again from 30th of July at Bike For Good on Fridays from 2:30 -4pm. Bikes are provided to all participants and can be loaned after sessions are finished. Suitable for beginner cyclists. For ages 16 -25 years. Cycling sessions are currently fully booked but people will be added to a waiting list and can take part if space becomes available.

Young Leaders Forum

For young people aged 12-25 years to learn climate literacy and leadership skills. They will receive free certified training and have the opportunity to take part in climate workshops.

Creative Writing 

Power of the Pen is a creative writing mentoring program that is dedicated to reaching out to vulnerable individuals and traditionally hard to reach groups in Scotland who have found their mental health exacerbated by the social isolation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim of this project is to help individuals tackle these issues through a series of workshops and creative writing courses. Contact: matisse@arkfound.org
