FUNDING

Glasgow Census Participation Fund

Scotland’s census deadline has been extended until the end of May 2022, and the Scottish Government is seeking third sector and community organisations’ help to ensure that as many people as possible participate.

Third sector organisations in Glasgow City can apply, via GCVS, for money to carry out work aimed at encouraging or helping people to complete the census. Activities such as:

  • Promotion or support at events, including events that are already planned.
  • Outreach work to target people who are less likely to have completed the census.
  • Inclusion in communications to encourage participation and signpost support.
  • Practical support to complete the census form.
  • Encouraging people to attend existing census events taking place around the city.

There is flexibility in how the objective is reached. To simplify the grant application process, we are applying standard rates to all work. If you run an event promoting and supporting census completion, you can apply for a grant of £150. For any staff time (including employees or volunteers) you can apply for a grant of £160 per day. This includes staff time organising and attending any event you run. To participate in this programme please apply online and fill in our short Glasgow Census Participation Fund form.

Govanhill Locality Plan Release

Two strands of the Govanhill Locality Plan, written by residents and staff, are being released in April. They reflect local priorities as expressed by Govanhill residents, and provide a series of recommendations to meet local needs and aspirations. We’re hoping that the plan will provide a useful framework and further inspiration to local organisations and residents who want to make a positive change in their community.

The ‘Collective Leadership, Co-Production, and Accountability’ strategy is all about residents’ involvement in service design and local decision-making processes.

Govanhill Community Engagement and Information Strategy’ will help local staff to ensure that residents remain well informed about the vital services and opportunities in the area, with a special emphasis on reaching those who are most excluded.

Both plans are accessible on govanhill.info/thriving-places. The first one was published at the beginning of April and the second one is being released at the end of April. Look out for the updates.

LOCAL NEWS

First Heritage Mural as part of Govanhill Open Museum

Govanhill Open Museum, a project bringing the neighbourhood’s unique stories and heritage out onto the streets, has launched its first mural! Designed by residents in collaboration with artists Conzo Throb and Ciaran Glöbel, it brightens up the wall of A. Gray Motors at the corner of S. Annandale Street and Calder Street. Nicknamed ‘A postcard from Govanhill’ the design attempts to showcase the neighbourhood’s diversity through the patterns submitted by Govanhill residents representing their various cultures. The S. Annandale Street mural is the first of two murals coming to Govanhill this spring as part of the project’s pilot phase, which was funded by Glasgow City Heritage Trust and Scotland’s Towns Partnership through their Scotland Loves Local campaign. This project is a collaboration between Govanhill Community Development Trust, Govanhill Housing Association, Community Renewal, and Glasgow Museums working under the Thriving Places banner.

Community notice boards are up

Govanhill has five brand new community notice boards which from the 1st week of April will be filled with useful information about local groups and activities, consultations and developments, support and other services, learning and employment opportunities, and key local contacts. Find them in the following locations:

  • Samaritan House (79 Coplaw Street)
  • Dixon Halls (656 Cathcart Road)
  • Locavore (corner of Victoria Road and Calder Street)
  • Govanhill Workspace (69 Dixon Road)
  • Govanhill Park (near the S. Annandale Street entrance)

The boards are managed under the Thriving Places programme for Govanhill with endorsement from the local Community Council. If you have any feedback on these notice boards or want to flag anything up, please contact Marzanna Antoniak at mantoniak@govanhillha.org

‘Govanhill Community Engagement and Information Strategy’ will help local organisations to ensure that residents remain well informed about the vital services and opportunities in the area, with a special emphasis on reaching those who are most excluded.

Both plans will be published on govanhill.info/thriving-places, with the first one appearing at the beginning of April. Look out for the updates.

Visual Guide to Govanhill Week of Action!

A week of action is taking place in Govanhill from Monday 28 February to Friday 4 March to tackle crime, fly-tipping, graffiti, and rubbish in the streets of our neighbourhood.

Please share with your local networks so that we can ensure every resident is aware of it. You can also reshare our Facebook post.

The initiative comes from the Crosshill & Govanhill Community Council with the support of Glasgow City Council, and will involve the local community council, school pupils and adult residents, church groups, council staff, Govanhill Housing Association, Police Scotland, and several enforcement teams.

A deep clean will take place, including street sweeping, litter picking, graffiti removal, cutting back overgrown shrubbery, gully cleaning, and removal of fly-tipped items. Parking will be suspended and some roads will be closed to facilitate this.

There will also be enforcement teams out, including environmental health inspectors,  community enforcement officers, commercial enforcement, public health officers, and litter/dog fouling enforcement. CCTV from streets, shops, and residents will also be used to trace culprits and issue appropriate action.

Several private lanes will be cleaned and cleared including Kingarth Lane, Plasterers Lane, Crooked Lane and Gaffney’s Lane as well as the lane opposite the garages on South Annandale Street.

This Week of Action is the result of months of work of the local Community Council and the Neighbourhood Liaison Coordinator and aims to build the momentum for continuous collective action to keep our local environment clean.
For updates on the week of action follow Crosshill and Govanhill Community Council and Thriving Places Govanhill on Facebook, and check www.Govanhill.Info.
